Following the successful delivery of a new early learning centre on campus in 2018, Brosnan was re-engaged to construct a new gymnasium and adjacent sports courts for Kaiapoi High School.
The new, 1200 square metre building is an all LVL timber structure of specific engineering design featuring exposed portal columns and rafters and joinery grade ply linings. The layout accommodates male and female changing rooms and storage areas on the ground floor with two additional storage areas to the first floor.
Catering for basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton the facility will also house an electronic scoreboard and bleachers seating to cater for up to 300 people during sports events. Outside, the new landscaped entry will include four large Gabion baskets with feature hardwood seating and decorative concrete paving to the entrance and surrounding hard landscaping.
Brosnan’s aptitude for thinking laterally is evident in the approach we have taken to this project. In order to meet the client’s tight delivery schedule, the team developed a methodology whereby the building’s roof and changing rooms will be assembled as “construction components” on the ground adjacent to the gymnasium—once constructed the two roof sections and changing rooms will be craned into place. Employing this method as opposed to a traditional method of individual member assembly has provided the client with the most cost-effective methodology and most efficient construction program.
The team has worked hard to minimise risk and disruption whilst working within a busy, operating school environment and, despite the unanticipated challenge of discovering asbestos in an old double garage on-site, the project remains on track to meet its strict completion date.
Brosnan Construction, the MOE and Kaiapoi High School have collaborated closely with the design team to deliver what will become a quality, long-term asset to benefit both the school and the surrounding community.
