Callaghan Hazardous Goods Facility

This project delivered six purpose-built buildings forming Callaghan Innovation’s new logistics precinct at the Client’s Gracefield Innovation Quarter. Designed to strengthen Callaghan’s service capabilities and allow for future expansion, the precinct includes bulk storage, cold storage, inward goods, offices, and facilities for safely housing chemicals used in scientific research.

Each building features tailored designs to meet HSNO compliance requirements, ensuring the secure storage and segregation of materials. With six different construction methodologies and consents, along with three resource consents each with unique criteria, the project required precise management.

The site was affected by asbestos, contaminated soils, and groundwater, so an environmental management plan helped mitigate the impact of contamination and our team worked carefully alongside the client to navigate these challenges. Despite poor ground conditions requiring significant additional earthworks, the project was completed on time. Effective communication and strategic resequencing ensured the successful delivery of this complex, multi-stakeholder project.
