Karamea Area School

Community-Focused School Redevelopment in Remote Karamea
In the heart of a 1,000-resident town, Karamea Area School’s redevelopment created a true community hub for current and future generations. The project replaced the school’s existing buildings with three new, energy-efficient facilities: an 885m² main learning block, a 682m² gym, and a 64m² hard-tech block.
Construction included decamping students to temporary spaces, demolition, ground engineering, and innovative offsite concrete manufacturing, necessary due to the single access road, which was often closed by severe weather. The new buildings feature weatherboard and vertical metal tray cladding, flexible learning spaces, and break-out areas for all year levels. Salvaged materials, including rimu and the art room, were reused where possible.
Community engagement was central, with locals involved in planning, and students participating in sod turning, stone laying, and work experience. The project was completed on time, fully endorsed by stakeholders, and recognised with Gold and Special Awards at the 2023 NZ Commercial Project Awards.
