Mt Isthmus Lodge

Architectural landmark lodge above Lake Hāwea
Brosnan Construction delivered Mt Isthmus Lodge, a highly complex and architecturally striking build perched above Lake Hāwea. Inspired by the surrounding mountains, the lodge features jagged cornices and dramatic heights, with the design evolving throughout the project. Brosnan worked closely with the architect and structural engineer to resolve intricate design challenges without compromising the original vision.
The remote location and exposure to harsh weather created ongoing logistical hurdles, requiring special arrangements for material deliveries and detailed programming. Construction began before the design was finalised, with all main timber beams fabricated on-site under the consulting engineer’s direction. Haro flooring was meticulously applied to all ceilings and walls by a handpicked team of craftsmen, ensuring a flawless finish.
The project was completed with only minor defects, achieving the client’s goal of creating one of New Zealand’s most prestigious accommodation options. Since completion, Mt Isthmus Lodge has received widespread recognition, including television features and architectural awards.

“I cannot think of one issue that, when raised, was not already understood and being addressed. The decision for Brosnan to handle the installation of the Haro wall and ceiling lining, as the initial contractor was unable to achieve the quality of finish required, resulted in what I believe to be some of the best carpentry/joinery I have ever seen.”
