Modern redevelopment of Queen Charlotte College
Queen Charlotte College, located at the entrance to the Marlborough Sounds, has been transformed into a modern educational facility through a three-stage redevelopment. Works included demolishing half the school, constructing new learning, technology, and science spaces, a commercial kitchen, and upgrading power and services.
The project was expedited by running stages one and three simultaneously, even as the scope expanded due to asbestos discoveries and stormwater issues. Disruption was minimised by scheduling deliveries and hazardous works outside student hours, and an innovative scaffold bridge maintained safe site access. Materials were recycled where possible, and open communication with the kura and consultants built trust and collaboration. Two students gained valuable hands-on experience with local subcontractors.
Despite scope increases, the project value rose by only 7%, delivering strong cost outcomes. The upgraded kura now serves as a central hub for the community, with cultural narratives guided by Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui iwi woven throughout.

“One of the nicest things about meeting the subbies was that there were so many ex-students.... My wish for you [the ākonga] is that you use it well, that you appreciate it for what it is and how many people contributed to this amazing space." Credit: Marlborough App (digital news site)
