UC Psychology Building

Complex refurbishment of Ann Ballin Psychology Building, UC
The seven-storey Ann Ballin Psychology Building at the University of Canterbury underwent a major refurbishment to modernise one of UC’s key teaching facilities. Brosnan’s scope included asbestos removal, structural upgrades, roofing and cladding replacement, new aluminium window joinery, and a distinctive architectural fit-out.
A significant services upgrade supported the university’s sustainability goals, with new mechanical, hydraulic, and cable systems installed. The project adopted a novel top-down construction approach after asbestos was discovered, enabling safer and more efficient delivery.
Throughout, a live fire egress was maintained, and careful planning minimised disruption on the operational campus. Strong communication and collaboration with the client and subcontractors ensured scope changes and complex engineering challenges were managed effectively. The project was completed on time and to a very high standard, with minimal impact on thousands of students who use the building each year.
