Seismic strengthening and reclad of Wellington College tower block
A detailed seismic assessment of Wellington College’s 1960s Tower Block identified the need for urgent earthquake strengthening. Brosnan, engaged under ECI, developed a staged approach that allowed the building to remain occupied and minimised disruption for 1,500 students.
The project included significant repairs, full recladding, replacement of 358 concrete panels with timber framing and metal cladding, fire and electrical upgrades, and roof replacement across four sections. Stringent health and safety measures were implemented, with secured and monitored sites, clear signage, and designated walkways. Disruptive works and deliveries were scheduled outside school hours, and asbestos was safely removed by specialists. Construction waste was recycled, and sustainable saveBOARD hoarding was used.
Despite scope increases, the project was delivered on programme and achieved a 100% quality score in the Ministry of Education audit, reflecting Brosnan’s commitment to high standards and safety in a live school environment.
